Conservative Party of Canada Release Climate Plan: Overview & Analysis

Earlier today Opposition Leader Erin O’Toole released the Conservative Party’s Climate Plan, titled Secure the Environment. The 15-page document details the Party’s approach to reducing emissions in line with Canada’s 2030 targets.  

Most notably, Mr. O’Toole indicated that a Conservative Government would replace the Liberal carbon pricing plan with a carbon charge that starts at $20 per tonne, rising to a maximum of $50 per tonne. The Plan further proposes coordination and collaboration with trade partners in setting standards and regulating industrial emissions. Further, it outlines investment mechanisms to support the development and deployment of technologies that would help Canada reduce emissions and grow the economy, including small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs), hydrogen technologies, electric vehicles, and carbon capture, utilization & storage (CCUS). The Plan concludes by stressing the need for increased investments in climate resiliency and disaster preparedness.
