Premier Ford Refreshes Cabinet Ahead of Summer Break

Premier Ford Refreshes Cabinet Ahead of Summer Break
Canada’s National Observer / Alex Tétreault

Summary of Changes

Today, Premier Doug Ford announced a moderate shuffle to his Cabinet, introducing several new faces to the front bench. These changes come at the end of the legislative session, as the house rises today for the summer break.

At the halfway point of this Government’s second mandate, this Cabinet shuffle seeks to accelerate progress on several key projects and priorities in the government’s efforts to “Build Ontario”.  Unveiling the largest cabinet in Ontario’s history, ministries have been divided and additional associate ministers have been added to the cabinet team.

With speculation that Premier Ford may call an early election, today’s changes reflect the potential Cabinet that could be leading the PCs into a campaign in order to demonstrate progress until then.

The timing of this announcement gives new ministers the opportunity to spend the extended summer break getting up to speed on their new portfolios and meet with stakeholders.

The most significant change from this shuffle is Stephen Lecce and Todd Smith swapping portfolios and the Ministry of Energy adding Electrification to its official mandate. After serving as Minister of Education since 2019, Stephen Lecce is now the Minister of Energy and Electrification. Todd Smith becomes Minister of Education after leading the energy file since 2021. Minister Lecce spoke on behalf of the Premier following the Cabinet Announcement, representing the Government’s continued prioritization of this file.
