Prime Minister Trudeau Announces $1.1 Billion for a National COVID-19 Research Strategy

Today, Prime Minister Trudeau announced $1.1 billion in additional funding for a national research strategy to combat COVID-19. The strategy will focus on three main pillars: vaccine research, clinical vaccine trials and expanding testing.

The Prime Minister acknowledged that COVID-19 testing will need to be significantly expanded before the Canadian economy can reopen.

Measures Include:

  • $115 million in additional funding for vaccine research.
  • $662 million for clinical vaccine trials in Canada.
  • $350 million to expand national testing and modeling of COVID-19.
  • Creation of the COVID-19 Immunity Task Force, led by Dr. David Naylor, Dr. Catherine Hankins, Dr. Tim Evans, Dr. Theresa Tam, and Dr. Mona Nemer to study issues such as testing, serology, and immunity.
  • Over 2 years, 1 million Canadians will be tested as part of the Immunity Task Force work.
