Sussex's Summary Analysis of the IESO 2021 Annual Planning Outlook

Earlier today the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) released the 2021 Annual Planning Outlook (APO). The report provides details and insights on Ontario’s electricity system needs resulting from detailed demand forecasting looking out over the next 20 years.

The 2021 APO is the third such report released by the IESO and is now projecting an increase in electricity demand at a rate not seen in almost two decades. The anticipated growth of demand has led to a larger than originally anticipated capacity need beginning in 2023 for both summer and winter peak consumption periods, increasing over the remainder of the reference period between 2023 and 2042. A need for energy emerges towards the beginning of the 2030s.
